I have struggled with my image of God through the years. When I began to study the Bible, it completely changed my view of God. I hope that reflecting often on some of these verses will encourage you and help you to see God in a new light.
P.S. For anyone who may be feeling a little impatient or rushed, there is a short version of the list available 🙂 Anyways, onto the list…
God is gentle
A bruised reed he will not break, a dimly burning wick, He will not quench.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
He cares about you
“Cast all your anxieties and worries on God for he cares for you.”
-1 Peter 5:7
“He is not slow about His promise as some count slowness but rather is forbearing towards you, not wishing that any would perish but that all would reach repentance and be saved
-2 Peter 3:9
Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.
Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
– Psalm 116:2
He delights in you
“For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
He gives generously
My peace I give to you, my peace I leave with you, not as the world gives do I give to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled or afraid.
What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
My God shall supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Jesus Christ.
Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.
-1 Corinthians 2:9
He likes to reward people
Without faith it is impossible to please Him. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who diligently seek him.
Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.
Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
– Colossians 1:13-14
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
He shall deliver you from the snare of the enemy.
I will rescue you for my sake—yes, for my own sake. I will not let my reputation be tarnished and I will not share my glory with idols!
He understands what we’re going through
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
He (Christ) was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
– Isaiah 53:3a
He cares about our sorrows
You keep track of all my sorrows.. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.
He gives us strength and power
Why then do you complain that the Lord doesn’t know your troubles or care if you suffer injustice? Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard? The Lord is the everlasting God; he created all the world. He never grows tired or weary. No one understands his thoughts. He strengthens those who are weak and tired. Even those who are young grow weak; young people can fall exhausted. But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
-2 Corinthians 12:9
He wants to heal us
But he (Christ) was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
– Isaiah 53:5
He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.
He wants to bring us hope
I have come so you may have life and have it to the full.
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
He has even more hope for us in heaven
In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
-1 Peter 5:10
I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have troubles. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you. When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.
For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!
-2 Corinthians 4:17
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.
He is a friend
A man who has friends must be a friend, but there is a friend who stays nearer than a brother.
So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
He is a teacher and a guide
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.
Lean not on your own understanding but acknowledge Him in all your ways and He shall make your paths straight.
This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow.
He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.
He is compassionate
It is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in their suffering.
As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.
All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
-2 Corinthians 1:3-4
“I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear?
He wants to help us through troubles
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
Cast your burdens on the Lord and He shall sustain you.
I have cared for you from the time you were born. I am your God and will take care of you until you are old and your hair is gray. I made you and will care for you; I will give you help and rescue you.
Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—Because I am God, your personal God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loves us.
He is close
I will dwell in the midst of you, says the Lord.
God has always been your defense; his eternal arms are your support.
For I hold you by your right hand—I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
He gives rest
My presence shall go with you and I will give you rest.
The Lord shall give you rest from your sorrow.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, He restores my soul.
There is no mission impossible with God
With humans it is impossible, but with God, nothing is impossible.
I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?
His ways are beyond our wildest imagination
My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.”And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
He gives us the commandments because He cares. He doesn’t want us to have unnecessary troubles of our own making.
Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea.
“But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas. Oh, dear people, will you listen to me now? Israel, will you follow my ways? I’ll make short work of your enemies, give your foes the back of my hand. I’ll send the God-haters cringing like dogs, never to be heard from again. But, you will feast on my fresh-baked bread spread with butter and rock-pure honey.”
Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD.
